INTRODUCTION

Bintulu Port is strategically located along the busy sea lanes between the BIMP-EAGA (Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East Asean Growth Area), Far East and European on latitude 03° 16´N longitude 113° 04´E on the north-east cost of resource-rich Sarawak, Malaysia.

The port, which commenced operations on 1 January 1983,has in two decades demonstrated its ability to play an increasingly important role in Malaysia's external trade. The terminal operator, Bintulu Port Sdn Bhd, is a subsidiary of Bintulu Port Holdings Bhd (BPHB) which is listed on the Main Board of the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange.

The Port covers an area of 320 hectares and serves a fast-expanding hinterland that includes the vast economic region under the Bintulu Development Authority in central sarawak as well as the outlying regions and neighbouring states.

The port is the only export gateway for Malaysia's biggest export earner-liquefied natural gas (LNG) - produced from the Central Luconia field, off the Bintulu coat. Its non-LNG sectors - containers, breakbulk, drybulk and liquid cargo - has been recording consistent growth over the last few years.

The port is well-equipped with dedicated berths and state-of-the art facilities to handle a variety of cargo and ships. A wide range of cargo-handling equipment and ancilliary facilities are also available.

Bintulu is also one of the few ports which has a Vessel Traffic Surveillance System (VTS), an important feature for safe navigation of vessels in the port limits.

The latest addition to the current facilities is a new dedicated container terminal with a total quay length of 450 metres. The container terminal is equipped with the latest port equipment and other supporting facilities similar to those available at other world class ports..
