Ports/Authority | Ipoh Cargo Terminal

INTRODUCTION

The development of a ‘dry port’ or inland port was initiated by the Malaysian government. The main aim of the ‘dry port’ is basically to provide an extension of port facilities into the hinterland of a seaport so that a trader based inland would be able to make use of the facilities and logistical services that are available at a seaport.

Ipoh Cargo Terminal (ICT), Malaysia’s first ‘dry port’, was incorporated as a private company under the auspices of the Ministry of Transport. Shareholders in ICT are Keratapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB), Perak State Economic Development Corporation, Port Klang Authority, Penang Port Commission and Johor Port Authority. The terminal commenced operations in November 1989 and was officially opened by the Minister of Transport on 10 November that same year.

ICT is located in the heart of the city of Ipoh. It is served by a network of rail and roads to all major ports and points of exit/entry in Peninsular Malaysia. It is linked to Penang and Padang Besar in the north and Port Klang, Johor Port and Singapore in the south.

ICT was established primarily to provide Perak-based traders an alternative in the choice of ports for their business. Since then, it has become the main gateway for most of the major and small scale industries located within the Kinta Valley and its surrounding areas.
