INTRODUCTION

Kuantan Port, which is situated on the eastern seaboard of Peninsular Malaysia, overlooks the major sealanes transiting the South China Sea linking Malaysia with the trans-pacific region.

Planned as a multi-purpose deep-sea port to serve as a catalyst for the development of the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia, Kuantan Port plays a key role in the national ports system.

The expanding economic role of Kuantan Port in the Malaysian economy was enhanced by the recent designation of the Eastern Industrial Corridor covering the east coast states of Pahang, Terengganu and Kelantan by the federal government. An important component of the Eastern Industrial Corridor was the national policy on the development of the petrochemical and chemical manufacturing industries.

Kuantan Port was identified as the primary sea outlet to fuel the growth of the economic region in which the development of petrochemical manufacturing industries features most prominently. Thus, in addition to the wide range of port facilities and services to cater for the growth of economic activities in the Eastern Industrial Corridor, Kuantan Port assumed a specific role to provide the port services required by the petrochemical manufacturing industries in the region.

The dedicated facilities for petrochemical vessels and cargo handling include two specialized liquid cargo berths with a total length of 2.205 metres and with depth alongside of 11.4 metres. The berths can receive vessels of up to 53,000 tonnes displacement. The port is operated by Kuantan Port Consortium Sdn Bhd (KPC).

FACILITIES

KPC’s pro-active port development policy has brought about the development of dedicated facilities and services for the handling of raw materials and products of the petrochemical manufacturing industries.

The state-of-the art specialized berths are fully equipped to handle direct shipside discharge of a wide range of chemical products through dedicated 20 product pipelines linked to common tankage facilities utilized by petrochemical manufacturing industries. The pipelines can discharge/load up to an average of 250 tonnes of liquid cargo per pipeline per hour.

As a custom-made port to serve the development of the designated economic region, Kuantan Port is easily accessible by road from the outlying industrial areas. The Gebeng industrial area for the petrochemical and chemical industries is less than 10 minutes away from the ports.

Accessibility to the port from Kertih, Kuantan and the Gebeng Industrial Area will be further enhanced when a direct rail link, now under construction, is completed.

Kuantan Port is linked globally through a network of shipping services, including leading container liner shipping companies, calling at its dedicated container terminal.
