INTRODUCTION

Since beginning operations on 10 October 1999, the port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) has surged ahead in attracting regular main line services. The first direct services began on 30 April by Mitsui OSK Lines. Maersk Sealand and APLNOL started direct regular services at PTP in June 2000.

In August 2000, PTP secured Maersk Sealand as a strategic partner. This shift is expected to bring an annual volume of 2 million TEUs to PTP. PTP handled well over 400,000 TEUs in the year 2000.

With these efforts, PTP was awarded the ‘Best Emerging Container Terminal Award’ by Lloyd’s List in October 2000.

“Tanjung Pelepas” (meaning “departure bay”) is located on the southwestern tip of Peninsular Malaysia at the mouth of the Pulai River which is one of the few areas in this region that draws a natural deep draft for international shipping.

The port is located in a free zone comprising a free commercial zone and a free industrial zone which frees clients from customs formalities, import and re-export duties and import licenses. PTP in turn provides facilities for value-added activities to meet market and sales requirements.

COMPUTERIZED EFFICIENCY

PTP employs the latest information technology which facilitates the free-flow of real-time information and near paperless transactions between shipping lines, forwarders, shipping agents and the port. The port’s automated gate system enables faster clearance times for boxes whilst all berth allocations, yard planning and ship planning are fully computerized to enhance productivity levels.

DISTRIBUTION PARK

The port has 400 acres of land reserved for distribution, logistics and warehousing activities. PTP envisions a distripark with activities ideal for consolidation, international procurement center operations, regional distribution centers and distribution services. With lines establishing their hubs at PTP and with the goal of providing a fast-start at the distripark, PTP caters to flexibility for users by providing build-up warehouses for lease, or bare land for sublease. An additional 600 acres of land has also been reserved for industrial activities.

MARINE SERVICES

PTP provides pilotage, towage and port control center services. Its Port Control Centre (PCC) is an integrated information service that links all port operations, thereby ensuring a highly efficient flow of traffic entering and exiting the port.
